UN envoy to Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura presented a proposal to the UN Security Council during a closed-door meeting on Wednesday night to ‘divide’ the disputed territory between Morocco and the Polisario Front, AFP learned Thursday (17 October 2024).
I have resumed and revived, in complete confidentiality, the concept of the division of territory with all the parties concerned,” the UN envoy said during the closed-door meeting, according to a transcript of the session.
De Mistura’s remarks were not made public during the Security Council meeting but were included in the minutes of the session seen by AFP.
Western Sahara, located on the Atlantic coast and bordered by Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria, is considered a “non-self-governing territory” by the United Nations.
