China’s military began live-fire exercises near Taiwan this morning (Tuesday), continuing its pressure on the island, whose authorities have said they are closely monitoring this ‘threat’ to regional stability.
In mid-October, Beijing conducted large-scale manoeuvres around the island involving a record number of military aircraft and ships, while Chinese President Xi Jinping called on his troops to prepare for war.
The Maritime Security Administration of Pingtan District in eastern China’s Fujian Province announced (Monday) that ‘live ammunition will be fired’ from 9am in a maritime area of about 150 square kilometres.
Pingtan is the closest point in mainland China to Taiwan, some 126 kilometres away. The area where the firing will take place is about 100 kilometres from the island, AFP reported
