Protesters in Bangladesh have called on President Mohammad Shahabuddin to resign after he made a statement that appeared to cast doubt on the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to our sources in Bangladesh, heated debates erupted in the country after Shahabuddin said in a press interview that there was no letter or evidence of Hasina’s resignation.
On Tuesday evening, a large number of protesters gathered around the presidential palace and organised a demonstration demanding Shahabuddin’s resignation.
Alongside the street demonstrations, thousands of posts were circulated on social media demanding the president’s resignation.
On 5 August, Hasina Wajed left Bangladesh for India in a military helicopter as protesters stormed her official residence.
Later, army chief Waqarul Zaman, who was meeting with political party representatives, announced that Sheikh Hasina had resigned and that an interim government would be formed, after which Mohammad Yunus was sworn in as head of a 17-member interim government.
