The Robert Koch Institute for Public Health on Tuesday announced the first case of a new strain of monkeypox virus in Germany.
In a statement, the institute said the infection, caused by the new strain acquired abroad, was detected on 18 October and explained that close physical contact is required for transmission.
The Royal Institute for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases currently considers the risk to the health of the general population in Germany to be low,’ it said, adding that it was closely monitoring the situation and would adjust its assessment if necessary.
In August, the World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency for the second time in two years after an outbreak of viral infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to neighbouring countries.
