Indian authorities on Thursday evacuated hundreds of thousands of people, closed schools and cancelled more than 200 train services across the country in preparation for a tropical storm forming in the Bay of Bengal.
Authorities plan to evacuate more than a million people from 14 districts ahead of the storm’s arrival.
Tropical Storm Dana is expected to intensify, with winds of 100 to 110 kilometres per hour and gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour, and make landfall later today or early Friday, the Indian Meteorological Department said.
The storm is expected to affect most areas of the eastern Indian state of Odisha, which was hit by strong winds and rain this morning.
