Brazil: Two dead, three wounded in shootout between police and armed gangs in Rio de Janeiro

At least two people were killed Thursday morning in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro. Three others were injured during a security operation between military police and an armed criminal gang.
The operation began in the early hours of the morning in the so-called Israel Complex in Cordoville, but according to military police spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Claudia Moraes, the police encountered significant resistance from the criminals who control the area.

The shooting disrupted traffic on Avenida Brasil and the movement of trains, buses and bus rapid transit throughout the area. Schools and health centers in the area were closed.
