Sixteen people were killed in armed clashes between two criminal gangs in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero Mexican authorities said.
An armed group entered the town of Tecpan de Galeana in several vehicles and tried to take control of the town and provoke clashes, locals said on social media.
Local police later intervened to counter the attack, killing two police officers and injuring four others, the Mexican defence ministry said in a statement.
