The Israeli Knesset approved a legislation on Monday that prevents the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from operating within Israel.

This decision follows years of increasing Israeli criticism of UNRWA, especially after the outbreak of war in Gaza following Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023.

On the other hand, members of the United Nations Security Council warned Israel against enacting this legislation, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about this move. The law includes a ban on UNRWA’s activities in Israeli territories, including East Jerusalem.
