Uruguay’s presidential election results lead to second round in 24 November

The two leading candidates in Uruguay’s presidential election have announced that voters will go to a run-off in November.
Preliminary results from the general election showed the moderate leftist coalition ahead of the conservative ruling coalition, with more than 60 per cent of ballots counted.

Former mayor Yamando Orsi, the candidate of the left-wing Frente Amplio coalition, and ruling party candidate Alvaro Delgado told crowds of supporters after midnight that they would go to a run-off on 24 November.

Election officials reported an 89 per cent turnout of the 2.7 million eligible voters in Uruguay, a model of democracy where voting in presidential and legislative elections is compulsory.
