The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, issued a decree on Tuesday inviting Qatari citizens over the age of 18 to participate in a public referendum on constitutional amendments on Monday.
Last Sunday, Qatar’s Shura Council unanimously approved the draft constitutional amendments announced by the Emir in mid-March, which will see a return to an ‘appointment’ rather than an ‘election’ system for selecting members of the Shura Council.
According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the referendum will take place on Tuesday 5 November.
The decree states that the referendum will begin at 7:00 am and continue until 7:00 pm, while the results will be announced within 24 hours of its completion.
It includes the establishment of a General Committee for the Referendum at the Ministry of Interior to organise and manage the referendum and announce its results.
Earlier this month, the Emir of Qatar announced that he would put constitutional amendments to a referendum, including the cancellation of the election of two-thirds of the Shura Council and the establishment of an appointed system for all members.
