Ethiopia starts construction of Africa’s biggest airport

Construction has begun on a new airport in Ethiopia, which Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed says will be Africa’s largest, capable of handling some 130 million passengers.

Abiy Ahmed told the Ethiopian parliament: ‘We have started work on the construction of the largest airport in Africa, which will receive between 100 and 130 million passengers a year,’

The Ethiopian Prime Minister continued: ‘We will expand our air fleet with 124 new aircraft as the largest operator and major aviation hub in Africa.
The head of state-owned Ethiopian Airlines, Mesfin Tasew, said in August that Ethiopia had signed an agreement to design a new four-runway airport that will be the largest in Africa when it is completed in 2029.
