In a move reflecting a significant strategic shift, Indonesia will begin joint naval exercises with Russia this week, indicating the desire of the new Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, to enhance his country’s influence on the international stage.
Despite the country’s history of adhering to a neutral and non-aligned policy during global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine dispute, Subianto is seeking to strengthen ties with Moscow, despite increasing Western pressures.
These exercises, named “Oruda-2024,” will start on November 4 and run until November 8. They may pave the way for greater military and economic cooperation between Indonesia and Russia, highlighting a fundamental change in the country’s foreign policy.
