More than 66,000 people have been evacuated from Guantanamo in the country’s easternmost province ahead of heavy rains threatening the region hit hard by Hurricane Oscar, Cuban state television said on Monday.
Seven out of ten municipalities in Guantanamo province, where Hurricane Oscar caused historic flooding and killed eight people two weeks ago, have been evacuated, the same source said.
The Cuban Meteorological Institute warned that ‘showers, rain and thunderstorms will reach the eastern end’ of the country. It added that an area of low pressure was also being monitored in southern Jamaica.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel wrote on the X platform: We are constantly monitoring the weather situation in Cuba and its possible evolution.
Hurricane Oscar hit Cuba on 20 October before weakening to a tropical storm.
