Spain: Floods hit Barcelona as rescue efforts continue in Valencia

Spain’s northeastern region of Catalonia was hit by flooding on Monday, while rescue efforts continued in neighbouring Valencia after flooding killed 217 people over the past six days.

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente confirmed the cancellation of local rail services in the region after Spain’s meteorological agency issued a red alert due to heavy rain in the provinces of Castellón, Tarragona and Barcelona.

Barcelona’s El Prat airport was badly affected by 150 litres of rain per square metre, with more than 80 flights cancelled or postponed and many incoming flights diverted to other airports.

Images posted on social media showed large parts of the airport flooded, with water entering some of its facilities.

The flooding also forced the closure of many roads in the area.
