Mexico: Supreme Court rejects parliamentary amendments to judicial reform

The Supreme Court of Justice, Mexico’s highest judicial body, has rejected parliamentary amendments by the leftist camp led by President Claudia Sheinbaum to repeal changes to the judicial system that would see all of the country’s judges elected by popular vote.

Last month, the Mexican Congress approved and ratified by a majority of states President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s initiative to implement a judicial reform that provides for the election of members of the Supreme Court by ‘popular vote’ from 2025.
On 31 October, 8 of the 11 members of Mexico’s Supreme Court announced their resignation in protest at the controversial judicial reform approved last month.
