COP29: Switzerland wants China and Russia to help pay for climate crisis

Switzerland will ask developing countries with high carbon emissions, such as China and Russia, to join the list of countries obliged to finance poor countries to combat the worsening effects of climate change.
The request will be discussed at the 19th United Nations Climate Change Conference, which opened yesterday in Baku, Azerbaijan.

. It could set a new target for climate finance. Delegations from nearly 200 countries, including Switzerland, are meeting to take stock of which countries need to contribute and how much.

Together with Canada, Switzerland is one of the first countries to put forward a clear proposal on the criteria for expanding the list of donor countries for climate finance. It is expected to be presented for discussion at the conference.
