More than 400 irregular migrants have arrived in one day on the island of Lampedusa, Italy’s closest point to North Africa.
Nearly 300 irregular migrants arrived on eight different boats on Sunday, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
A further 109 migrants arrived in Lampedusa on Monday morning, bringing the total number of migrants to reach the island in one day to more than 400.
According to ANSA, the latest group of migrants to reach the island came from Libya.
Frontex, the agency responsible for protecting the EU’s external borders, rescued the latest group of migrants, whose nationalities include Syria, Algeria, Egypt and Pakistan.
According to the Italian interior ministry, 58,504 irregular migrants arrived in the country between 1 January and 11 November.2024
