6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia’s Papua province

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Papua province on Friday, Indonesia’s geophysics agency said, ruling out a tsunami.

The epicentre of the quake was at a depth of ten kilometres, the agency said.

Indonesia lies in an area known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic activity above several tectonic plates, as indicated by the region’s geology and volcanic activity in general.

A large number of small earthquakes occur regularly due to the convergence of major tectonic plates in the region, according to USGS records, with Indonesia experiencing more than 150 magnitude 7 earthquakes between 1901 and 2019.
