Voting begins on constitutional changes in Gabon

Voting on constitutional amendments began in Gabon on Saturday.

Some 848,000 Gabonese citizens have been invited to approve or reject Gabon’s draft constitution in a referendum, Radio France Internationale reported on Saturday, noting that voting is scheduled to last until 18:00 local time in Gabon.

The text submitted to the referendum stipulates that the system of government will be presidential, that the post of prime minister will be abolished and that the president of the republic will be elected for a seven-year term, renewable once.
