Gabon: More than 91% vote for new constitution

According to preliminary results released by Gabon’s Commission of Transition and Reform Institutions, 91.80%of citizens voted in favour of the new constitution in a referendum held on Saturday.

According to the Gabonese Ministry of the Interior, 8.20 % of voters rejected the new constitution, representing a turnout of 53.54 %

Once the Constitutional Court confirms the final results, the next step will be to organise the presidential elections scheduled for August 2025, thus ending the transitional period that began on 30 August 2023.

Among other things, the referendum on the new constitution introduced a presidential system of government, abolished the post of prime minister and elected the president for a seven-year term, renewable once.
