Seventeen people have been killed in eastern Brazil when a bus veered off a mountain road and plunged into a ravine in the state of Alagoas, according to local authorities who have revised the previous death toll.

Authorities had previously reported that 23 people had died in the accident before correcting the toll.
The state governor, Paulo Dantas, said in a statement on Monday that the bus ‘fell into a ravine more than 20 metres deep, killing 17 people and injuring several others’.
Brazilian media reported that 40 people were on board the bus.
