Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said at the Global Citizen Now conference in Rio de Janeiro. His country, Norway, will donate $60 million to the Amazon Fund.
This is in recognition of Brazil’s efforts to reduce deforestation in the Amazon by 31% by 2023.
The Amazon Fund will be managed by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and coordinated by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
According to Teresa Campello, Director of Social and Environmental Affairs at BNDES, project approvals for the Amazon Fund have totalled R$882 million this year.
Data from the Legal Satellite Deforestation Monitoring Project in the Amazon (Prodes/Inpe) shows that from August 2023 to June 2024, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon reached its lowest level since 2015 and the fifth lowest level since measurements began in 1988.
