A US judge on Monday granted prosecutors’ request to dismiss the case against President-elect Donald Trump for attempting to overturn the results of the presidential election he lost four years ago.
Earlier on Monday, Special Counsel Jack Smith asked Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the case on the grounds that it is Justice Department policy not to prosecute a sitting president, which Trump will be after he is sworn in on 20 January.
Trump has been accused of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden, and of illegally retaining classified documents after leaving the White House, but no hearings have begun in either case.
