The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, has requested judges to issue an arrest warrant for Myanmar’s military leader on charges of crimes against humanity and the deportation and persecution of the Muslim Rohingya minority.
Khan stated from a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh that he intends to seek more arrest warrants for Myanmar’s leaders soon, a move welcomed by human rights organizations.
The Myanmar government refuses to recognize the Rohingya as one of the country’s 135 legal ethnic minorities, instead labeling them as “Bengalis,” implying they are illegal settlers from Bangladesh.
