A vessel carrying over 200 passengers sank in the Niger River early Friday morning, resulting in at least eight confirmed fatalities, while more than 100 individuals, mostly women, are reported missing.

According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, the boat was en route from Kogi State to neighboring Niger State when it capsized.

Rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing passengers.
