General strike in Italy over low wages, budget deficit

Thousands of Italians participated in a general strike today, protesting against low wages and declining purchasing power.
The strike lasted eight hours across all sectors except transport, after Transport Minister Matteo Salvini ordered its duration to be reduced.

This comes amid criticism from the European Union over the large budget deficit and pressure to reduce public debt nearing three trillion euros.

Many sectors, including education and healthcare, industry, postal services, and the courts were affected.
