Indonesia: Sumatra landslide kills 9 tourist bus passengers

Nine people on a tourist bus have been killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, officials said.

The bodies were recovered from the bus, which was covered in trees, mud and rocks caused by the landslide on Thursday evening on the road between the cities of Medan and Berastagi in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province, which is the main route from the capital Medan to other areas in the region, the officials said.

The bus was among vehicles stranded by landslides along the road since Wednesday morning.

More than 10 people were injured and taken to hospital in the city of Medan.

At least 20 people have died in other landslides and floods in the region this week.
