A pair of European satellites was launched from India on Thursday in the first mission to create an artificial solar eclipse.

The mission, launched by the European Space Agency, aims to extend the duration of the eclipse to six hours, compared to the few minutes of a natural eclipse, allowing for a detailed study of the sun’s corona.

Operations are expected to begin next year, and the first eclipse results are anticipated in March following the testing of the two spacecraft.
