A U.S. federal appeals court upheld a law on Friday requiring Chinese company ByteDance to divest its investments in the popular short video app TikTok from the United States by early next year or face a ban.

This ruling now increases the chances of an unprecedented ban within six weeks on the social media app used by 170 million Americans.

Additionally, the decision represents a victory for the Justice Department and opponents of the China-owned app, delivering a blow to ByteDance.
