Ghana’s electoral commission has announced that John Dramani Mahama has won the country’s presidential election with 56 per cent of the vote against Vice President Mahamadou Bawumia, who received 41 per cent.
Mahama, who previously held the presidency of Ghana between 2012 and 2017, received 6.3 million votes, or 56.5 per cent of the total, the commission said.
Mahama promised to ‘reset’ Ghana on several fronts during a campaign that prioritised the economy.
Ghana is the continent’s top gold producer, a major cocoa exporter and a model of stability in a region that has been rocked by coups, constitutional challenges and insurgencies.
