Philippine authorities evacuated about 87,000 people in the central region of the country on Tuesday, a day after the Kanlaon volcano erupted, spewing a plume of ash and superheated gases and dropping chunks of debris down hillsides.

The warning level for the eruption of Kanlaon volcano on the central island of Negros was raised by one level, signalling the potential for more powerful and explosive eruptions.

Domestic flights and an international flight to Singapore were cancelled due to the eruption of Kanlaon.
