South Korea: Parliament passes law calling for the arrest of President Yun

South Korea’s parliament has passed a bill calling for the arrest of eight people, including President Yun Suk-yol, in connection with the declaration of martial law on 3 December.

The resolution calls for the immediate arrest of the president and seven other officials, Yonhap news agency reported

.

It added that the parliament’s decision is subject to the proposal and review process by the judiciary committee and then to a debate in the general assembly, but will have no legal effect.

Among the seven other officials whose arrests are sought are former defence minister Kim Yong-hyun and former interior minister Lee Sang-min.

The resolution was passed with 191 votes in favour, 94 against and 3 abstentions.

The opposition’s call for the arrest of President Yul and other officials follows its failure to pass a bill in parliament calling for his impeachment.
