Emergency services and the Red Cross in Spain have reported the deaths of six migrants while attempting to reach the Canary Islands on dilapidated boats from West Africa.

The Canary Islands are facing a record increase in the number of migrants, with deaths and disappearances rising at a rate five times higher than those arriving alive.
