Chad Welcomes Over 700,000 Sudanese Refugees in Largest Refugee Wave in Its History

Chad has welcomed over 700,000 Sudanese refugees fleeing conflict and hunger in their country, with around 60,000 arriving in October 2023 following an escalation of fighting in Darfur.

This wave is the largest in Chad’s history, with the total number of Sudanese refugees exceeding 1.1 million. Women and children make up 90 percent of the new refugees, with 71 percent reporting that they have experienced human rights violations.
