French President Emmanuel Macron appointed centrist François Bayrou as prime minister on Friday, following a historic parliamentary vote that ousted the previous government last week.
The French presidency announced on Friday the appointment of centre-left leader François Bayrou as the new prime minister, replacing Michel Barnier, who was denied a vote of confidence by parliament more than a week ago.
Bayrou, , leads the centrist Movement for Democracy (MODEM), which he founded, and has been a close confidant and supporter of Macron since he took office. Bayrou became the sixth prime minister under Emmanuel Macron since 2017, and the 28th under the Fifth Republic.
