Mikheil Kavalashvili, a former football player, was elected president of Georgia on Saturday after his party, “Georgian Dream,” won the election.

He received 224 out of 225 votes in a session attended by 225 voters.

This victory is seen as a setback for Georgia’s EU aspirations and a boost to Russia’s influence in the region, as the opposition views his election as a challenge to the country’s direction.
