German Chancellor Olaf Schulz faces a confidence vote in the Bundestag on Monday, a proposal he put to parliament last week after his centre-left coalition government collapsed, with the aim of calling early elections on 23 February.
Schulz plans to ask the parliament for a vote of confidence at noon today, with MEPs voting after the debate.
While 207 Socialist MEPs have said they will support Schulz in the vote, the Greens have recommended that 117 MEPs abstain. To pass the vote of confidence, 367 MEPs must vote for Schulz.
In the event of a no-confidence vote against Schulz, the chancellor will immediately ask President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to dissolve parliament and call early elections seven months earlier than originally planned.
