Tunisia: 20 Years for Ben Ali’s Widow and Son-in-Law in Corruption Case

A Tunisian court sentenced Leila Trabelsi, the widow of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and her former son-in-law, businessman Mohamed Sakher El Materi, to 20 years in prison on Tuesday in a financial corruption case.
The case involves a public contract awarded to both individuals without following legal procedures, and included financial corruption that caused significant losses to the state.
Both were convicted of financial crimes amounting to billions of dinars, while Trabelsi resides in Saudi Arabia and El Materi in Seychelles, which had previously refused to extradite him to Tunisia in 2013.
