Corbandi: Upcoming visit to Sudan as part of regional mediation efforts

Lawrence Corbandi, the envoy of the East African Development Organization (IGAD), announced that he will visit Sudan in January to play a mediating role after the country’s membership in the organization was suspended for a year, starting in April 2023.
Sudan has been experiencing a war between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of over 12 million people.
Despite mediation efforts by IGAD, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, no results have been achieved.
However, Corbandi considered the suspension of membership to be a secondary issue, emphasizing the importance of dialogue for achieving peace and Sudan’s return to the organization.
