Bulgaria and Romania have officially joined the Schengen Area after 13 years of waiting, granting their citizens freedom of movement within the region.
The implementation of the decision began partially in March 2024, with air and sea travel allowed, while the land borders remained closed.
After Austria lifted its veto, which had been blocking their accession, measures to reduce the flow of refugees were applied, helping to expedite the process.
This accession is expected to boost the economy, with GDP growth of at least 1% in both countries.
