U.S. Imposes Sanctions on Russian Judge After Sentencing Opponent to Prison

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on a Russian judge for her role in the arrest of activist Alexei Gorinov for opposing the war in Ukraine.
Judge Olga Mendelieva sentenced Gorinov to seven years in prison in July 2022, for spreading false information about the Russian military.
Gorinov, a former member of the Moscow City Council, was the first person to be jailed under wartime censorship laws. He was also sentenced to an additional three years in November 2023 for justifying terrorism.
