An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the city of Antofagasta in Chile yesterday, the Euro-Mediterranean Earthquake Observatory said.

The quake struck at a depth of 104 kilometres, the centre said.

Antofagasta is located 1,100 kilometres north of the Chilean capital, Santiago.

There are no reports of human casualties or material damage as a result of the earthquake.
