Switzerland: Ban on Niqab and Face Covering in Public Places

Switzerland’s ban on face coverings, also known as the “niqab ban,” came into effect on January 1, 2025, imposing a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs (approximately $1,143) on violators.

With this move, Switzerland joins five other European countries in implementing this ban.
In March 2021, 51.2% of Swiss voters approved the “anti-burqa” initiative.

The law includes exceptions for face coverings for security, climatic, or health reasons and artistic, entertainment, and promotional purposes.
