An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck northern Ethiopia today, causing a volcano to erupt in the town of Sigintu in the Afar region, but no human or material losses have been reported so far.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the earthquake struck at a depth of about ten kilometers, 55 kilometers northwest of the town of Asbi Teferi, between the Afar and Oromia regions.
Parts of Ethiopia lie on the so-called main Ethiopian fault line, and since late December, the American Institute of Geophysics has recorded more than 67 earthquakes in the region, mainly concentrated in the “Fantale” region, according to local media.
