A powerful storm is impacting multiple areas in central United States, prompting several states including Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri to declare a state of emergency.
The National Weather Service has described the storm as potentially causing “the heaviest snowfall in a decade,” with highways and bridges covered in snow and ice, leading the National Guard to intervene to assist stranded motorists.
The storm has resulted in the cancellation of hundreds of flights, including around 200 on Sunday and an additional 40 on Monday.
Several major Amtrak train routes have also been canceled, affecting the travel of thousands of passengers.
More than 70 million Americans are under winter weather alerts.
