China: Rescue efforts continue after Himalayan earthquake as death toll reaches 95

An earthquake struck the Tibetan Himalayan region of southwestern China on Tuesday, killing at least 95 people and collapsing scores of buildings, while also affecting neighboring areas such as Nepal.

China’s National Earthquake Administration said the 6.8-magnitude quake struck Dingri county near the China-Nepal border at 9:05 a.m. (1:05 GMT), while the U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.1.

The Chinese military sent a drone to survey the epicenter of the quake in southwest China’s Xichang autonomous region, Xinhua news agency reported.

The agency said 95 people were killed and 130 injured, after earlier reporting a death toll of 53.
