China: Tibet earthquake death toll rises to 126

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck the Tibetan Himalayan region of southwestern China on Tuesday has risen to 126, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

“A total of 126 people have been confirmed dead and 188 others injured as of 7 p.m. Tuesday,” the agency said, according to AFP.
Earlier, the Chinese agency reported that the initial death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck the Tibetan region in the Himalayas had risen to 95.

Although earthquakes are common in the region, Tuesday’s quake is the strongest recorded in five years within a 200-kilometer radius, according to the China Earthquake Monitoring Center.
