Lebanese sources confirmed on Wednesday the selection of former army chief Joseph Aoun as a consensus candidate in preparation for his election as president of Lebanon, following the announcement by politician Sleiman Frangieh that he was withdrawing his candidacy.
Several parliamentary blocs have announced their support for Aoun’s candidacy, while opposition lawmakers have linked their backing to achieving broad parliamentary consensus.
The Lebanese Parliament is scheduled to hold a session tomorrow, Thursday, to elect a new president. This will be the thirteenth session since the term of former President Michel Aoun ended over two years ago.
