U.S. announces $500 million in new military aid to Ukraine

The United States has announced a new $500 million military aid package for Ukraine as part of its ongoing support for Kiev’s defense capabilities.

During a meeting of Ukraine’s international supporters in Germany, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin revealed the new aid package to Kiev, noting that it includes additional missiles for the air force, more ammunition, surface-to-air munitions and other equipment to support F-16s.

Addressing the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the deployment of Western troops to his country was crucial to helping him force Russia to make peace.

“The deployment of partner battalions is one of the best tools” to “force Russia to peace,” Zelensky said at the same meeting of the Contact Group, which includes his country’s main allies.

Late last month, the United States announced a $2.5 billion military aid package for Ukraine, including HIMARS missile systems, missiles, anti-armor systems, air-to-ground ammunition and spare parts.
