The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today, Friday, that it has summoned the Iranian ambassador in Paris to demand the release of French nationals held in Iran.
The ministry stated in a press release that the conditions of detention for its citizens in Iran are “humiliating” and amount to torture under international law. It also reiterated its warning to French citizens against traveling to Iran.
Since 2022, Iranian authorities have detained French national Cecile Kohler and her partner Jacques Barry on charges of espionage, in addition to a third French citizen named Olivier.
